Today, Tiger 11 assists Moku Pahu on her last voyage as she departs with the last load of sugar from Maui. Hawaiian Sugar dates itself to 1835 when the first successful sugar plantation was established on the island of Kauai. Sugar plantations grew throughout the islands, including over 30 on Maui alone. The sugar industry can be held responsible for many developments in Hawaii, including the great melting pot of diversity with immigrants from China, Japan, Puerto Rico, Korea, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Germany and more. Sugar plantations brought than industry to Hawaii, they helped to make Hawaii the melting pot we celebrate today.
